ARC Review: Heir of Thunder by Karissa Laurel

Heir of Thunder

Author: Karissa Laurel

Series: The Stormbourne Chronicles #1

Genre: YA, high fantasy, steampunk

The Lord of Thunder’s sudden death leaves his daughter, Evelyn Stormbourne, unprepared to rule Inselgrau in his place. Weeks before Evie’s ascension to the throne, revolutionaries attack and destroy her home. She conceals her identity and escapes under the protection of her father’s young horse master, Gideon Faust. Together they flee Inselgrau and set sail for the Continent, but they’re separated when a brutal storm washes Evie overboard. In her efforts to reunite with her protector and reach allies on the Continent, Evie befriends a band of nomads who roam the world in airships fueled by lightning. She also confronts a cabal of dark Magicians plotting to use her powers to create a new divine being, and she clashes with an ancient family who insists her birthright belongs to them. If she’s to prevail and defeat her enemies, Evie must claim her heritage, embrace her dominion over the sky, and define what it means to be Heir of Thunder.

I received a free copy for an honest review

I really, really, really hate cliffhangers 😑

But I have to be honest here, and that is this book was totally not as I been expected 😳, and definitely exceeded my expectation.

One of the things that made this book so good was its introduction and its first chapter. Even if I didn't receive a free copy for an honest review, the first chapter was enough for me to click the buy button on my kindle because that intro was AMAZING. It's not too fast paced that you wouldn't be able to keep up, and because the author went straight ahead and dragged us into the action from the first page it had my blood pumping from the beginning, I was immediately hooked.

The book was also extremely well balanced between both the character romantic relationships and the overall plot-line. There's the romance for anyone that enjoys a good hate-love relationship (people like me) and a brief triangle love so that's that for people that love a good love rivalry. The overall fantasy plot-line part for people who loves some magical actions along with fantasy world-building.

There's also a betrayal between characters (spoilers) and some twists and turns here and there to keep things interesting.

Overall, the world building was organized, and the story was interesting, dynamic with some actions, the romance was amazing, and this is just a really good book. It had covered many things for readers that enjoy different aspects, and it earned itself some solid four stars.
