Interview With Author Casey Odell

What is your favorite writing and reading genre?

I love reading fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal, but I'm really open to most genres. As a writer I'd like to explore some sci-fi one of these days! I'll always be writing fantasy in some way though, the possibilities are endless!

Where and how did you get your idea for your books?

I'd been thinking of the idea for the Cursed Magic series for years before I decided to actually write it. I guess the idea is a mix of inspiration over the years from other fantasy series like Lord of the Rings and various manga and anime series.

If a movie or TV show would be created for your books, which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead roles for you books?

I get asked this a lot, but have yet to come up with an answer! I would like less well known actors though, maybe that's why I have trouble with it?

When did you decide to become a writer?

I don't think it was ever a conscious decision. I just had a story I wanted to tell and did it. I didn't think I would ever be good enough at it where people would want to read my stuff!

How did you get your book published? How long did it take for you to get it published?

Well, I am self published, so like 5 to 10 minutes to upload it, haha. It took a month or two of research, though, to decide that self-publishing was for me.

Do you ever get writer's Block? If so, which book did you get the worst while writing?

Allll the time! The third book in the Cursed Magic series was definitely the longest! I was dealing with a lot of anxiety and health issues at the time, so that didn't help.

What is the average time for you to write a book?

I don't know, haha. I'm absolutely terrible at scheduling and being timely. Just ask my readers!

For your own reading, do you prefer kindle or paperback books?

I love the dictionary feature on the kindle and the convenience, so it's what I read on the most these days. But nothing beats the feel of real thing!

How are the covers made for you books?

I currently make them myself. The first two books I drew out the design by hand, then scanned it into the computer. I use Corel painter to do the rest. The third book and the short story were done entirely digitally.

What advice would you give writer wannabes and future/young authors?

Write. Just do it. You won't get better at it unless you do it. Don't let fear or anxiety of what people might think of your story keep you from writing it. Don't worry about publishing it until after it's done. I think people get so overwhelmed by it all, they give up before they start. Also, I create music playlists to help set up certain moods. That helps me quite a bit!

What do you do during your free time, how do you relax?

I'm a pretty big nerd and introvert, so I enjoy gaming, reading, and watching TV and movies. I like to travel when I can and dabble in photography. I also spend way too much time on the computer, who hasn't gone on a Wikipedia binge?
